Is God's Word my very life?
Is God's Word my very life?
Words. There are so many of them, everywhere we turn. Words have power to direct our thoughts and beliefs. Some will wear us down, cause us to doubt, make us think that what is wrong is somehow right.
God tells us in Proverbs 18:21 that "death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit." And again in James 3:9-10 He reminds us, "With [the tongue] we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way."
So how do we speak life into our families, into our lives?
I think of Moses, near the end of his earthly life, as he told the people of Israel all the laws and commandments that the LORD had given them. He gave the laws to the people after they crossed the Red Sea, and then again, 40 years later as they were preparing to possess the land God gave them. He closes this second giving of the law with these words:
"And when Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, he said to them, 'Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.'" Deuteronomy 32:45-47
Moses' words are as vital today as they were when he spoke them thousands of years ago. What we truly believe will become evident by what we do. A renewed mind will result in a transformed life. So how does this become reality in our lives today?
Take to heart all of God's Word.
Wash your mind daily with the water of God's Word. It is important to read it aloud as a family. Hearing takes it deeper into our being. We hear the world's words nonstop. There is a battle over what ideas we will believe in our minds. We will act on what we believe. May God's Word be the foundation of what we truly believe.
Hear the warnings in God's Word.
God's Word is living and active. When the commands, warnings, promises and principles of God's Word are understood in context, they convey timeless truth for us to apply to our lives today.
Teach God's Word to your children.
How will our children know that God's Word is truth? They will watch and learn as they see that God's Word is the ultimate authority in our own lives, guiding us through difficult times.
This Word of God is not empty to you.
Our Creator has kept His Word through the ages for us to know His thoughts, His heart, His plans toward us. God's Word is a treasure of immeasurable worth!
God's Word is your very life!
In the account of God's creation in Genesis 1, we see that He speaks all things into existence; the power of His Word is beyond our comprehension! And yet when He created man, God breathed into man the breath of life. Yes, God's Word is essential to life; it is our life!
How does God's Word move from being on a page in black and white and become your very life on a daily basis?
Oh Father God thank You for the most amazing gift of Your Word; our Bible. May it more and more become our treasure; more precious to us than any other earthly thing. May Your Holy Spirit have full freedom to teach us the heart of Your Word and may we be ready to take it in and live it out, to Your glory!
