Christmas Morning Traditions
What special ways do you celebrate Christmas morning?
My dear friend, Peggy, began a tradition in her family that is now being enjoyed by her grandchildren and it sounds so fun! Of course, each family can personalize there own traditions.
Here is what her family does, along with a few more ideas:
Gather everyone around the Christmas tree in an otherwise dark room with the only light coming from the Christmas tree and maybe some candles. As one reads the story of Jesus' coming from Luke 2:1-40, another uses a flashlight to draw everyone's focus to "see" what is happening in the reading. Focus light and attention on a globe or a map of the world for the first verse. Move the focus to Joseph, Mary, the Baby Jesus, shepherds, etc. as each one is mentioned. When the heavenly host praise God, stop and sing your own praise to Him. After the reading, each one may share something about Jesus that makes them thankful to Him. Close this time with a simple prayer. For a more active bunch, let them act out the text themselves or with their stuffed animals.
However you choose to celebrate Jesus' birth, make sure you celebrate Him. The priority we actually give to Him underlines what we truly believe is most important. May our actions match our words. The Lord looks at our heart, and from our heart flows what we value in life. Those around us are watching to see if what we do matches what we say.
The value of creating family traditions can be great. They carry what is valued from one generation to the next. They create a family identity and they bring us together, both now and later in memories. May you and your family celebrate Jesus - intentionally, reflectively and joyfully - this week, and for many years to come!
